We just had to replace motherboard in a computer. Everything is working
except the network adapter. It is on Intel motherboard. The connection
light and the activity light are on, packets are sent out, none are
received. I know the cable and the connection to the router are good, but
LAN port is not getting IP address from the router. We did a repair on the
operating system, reinstalled the LAN driver, but to no avail. I can ping
the loopback address.

Does anyone have a solution to the problem?

So you cannot ping the router and get a reply. Assuming the new MBD hardware
is OK, try loading the correct driver for the MBD built in LAN I/O. (Usually
you download the newest version from the MBD Mfr. Or, try using the drivers
that came with the MBD when all else isn't possible. You may also need to
rebuild windows (TCPIP) network connections/configuration to the LAN I/O.

Try reinstalling the motherboard's chipset drivers. This step is often
neglected in case of board replacement - the assumption, if one is made, is
that these low-level drivers are covered by the XP install. They aren't,
and it leads to this sort of result.

If not caused by you not yet installing the mobo's chipset drivers so
the onboard NIC will actually work (i.e., an interface to it gets
defined to the OS) then maybe you need to reset your router. You
didn't specify WHICH router you have. Most have a reset button on the
back. Pressing it momentarily may only do a settings reset back to
factory defaults. You may have to keep pressing it for over 30
seconds to force a hardware reset of the router.

Presumably you have the TCP setup for the LAN connectoid defined to
get a dynamically assigned IP address and the same for the DNS server.
If you setup TCP to use a static IP address then your host won't be
asking your router's DHCP server for an IP address (but then "ipconfig
/all" should show your static IP setup).

I have installed the chip set drivers for the motherboard, and the TCP/IP
properties are set to get an address dynamically from the router.

And that means what? That your problem is now solved? Or the problem
remains?
