Can't get into server

I replaced a Win 98 computer in our school with a new
XP. I believe it is setup correctly. When the XP is
booted and the teacher tries to access an attendance
program on the server(2003), the program does not work.
You have to go through the Network Neighborhood to the
server and then type in a password (only on a XP does
this happen). Once you have done this, the attendance
program will work. I mapped a drive to the server and
when the XP is started, it says the drive did not connect.
