Can't get to internet via wireless access point

I have the internet connection always on via comcast
cable modem (desktop pc) and the laptop is set to
infrastructure mode.
I can see that the wireless access point is running and
signal strength is excellent from the laptop.
I cannot get my laptop to ipconfig /renew. It says there
was an error -i can release and view connections.
How do I get to the internet? Am I missing a step?
It's a USR8022 wireless access point with dhcp enabled.
Laptop has xpp and desktop has xph.
Wireless card in laptop is enabled and working fine
according to properties. Same with the access point.
