Are you using Windows XP ?If yes, SP1 or SP2?
Check Tools -> Internet Options->Connections Tab ->LAN settings. Make sure
that Automatically detect settings box is checked and use proxy server is
unchecked.
You can also download and run this program if you got XP to repair your
winsocket:
