I've reinstalled the modem in a different slot. CS said
to download flasher software from usr support page to
update firmware. when I do this, the software does not
detect my modem. Device Mgr can interrogate the modem and
says its working properly, but my device manager shows
only comm1 and lpt1 as exisitng ports, and the device mgr
shows the modem connected to comm4. I installed latest
ICN software from usr; now i get a startup message saying
that "ICN can't detect a modem. Please install modem...

Are you using 3Comm/US Robotics drivers or XP's driver for the modem?
Sometimes changing slots will cause XP to re-detect as new device and use
its own drivers cache for the driver.
