Can't get external monitor to work

I just bought a 28" Viewsonic external monitor for my Dell M1710 with a
7900gtx. It's running Vista 64. When I connect the monitor to my DVI output
(DVI to HDMI cable) all that happens is that on my laptop, the screen just
flickers over and over as it detects and undetects the monitor (kind of like
plugging in and unplugging a usb device over and over it makes that sound). I
was convinced it was the monitor until I a) booted up XP and it worked fine
and b) connected it via VGA and it worked fine. I want to run vista and I
want to run dvi->hdmi but it looks like I won't be able to. I'm running the
latest nvidia drivers. Its nearly impossible to even get to any settings b/c
of the screen flickering.

JP,

My opinion is that this is a driver problem, rather than a Vista problem.
You might try a forum that addresses monitor issues, or nVidia issues, or
computer graphics issues, etc. You might get answers by using google to
query the Internet. I'll bet others have posted on this problem and the
answer is out there. Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

Most Vista problems are "driver" problems, unfortunately, there isn't anyway
to correct a driver problem. I've already tried using multiple sets of
drivers to no avail. If its a driver problem, the only thing I can do is
wait for a driver that may or may not come. Maybe its a vista problem that I
can work around though. Otherwise, its back to XP for me

JP,

Maybe start by contacting Dell for information as to drivers needed to run
that monitor. Or, check the Dell website to determine whether it contains
information about drivers for that monitor. Just some ideas to get started.
