Ok so I'm at my wits end. My computer plays CDs fine and DVD movies fine.
However when I try to play a DVD-ROM (a game like call of duty 2 for
example), the dvd "autoruns" but I just get an empty box, like when you click
on your cd drive with nothing in it. Thinking it was a problem with my
computer (Dell computers generally have lots) I have just forked out £30 for
an external DVD-ROM drive only to find that it still won't play them! The
same thing comes up. Does anyone know why this is and can they help me solve
this? Unfortunately the PC is out of warranty (Dell never got back to me
despite repeated attempts to contact them about the problem) so I can't send
it back!

Please someone help me before I trash this thing!

Hi Benaroo,

Are you able to right click those DVD's and explore them?

My advice is donated "AS IS" without warranty; nor do I confer any rights.

Hi Jimmy,

If I go into "my computer" and right click and explore the dvd, it just
comes up with the same thing - blank. Interestingly though it does recognise
that there is a dvd-rom in there (it says "COD2DVD" for example if I insert
Call of Duty 2). I also have forgotten to mention that when occasionally
installing the games off a networked pc actually works, the games run fine. I
have also tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drive and updating the drivers.
I am totally confused!

Hi Benaroo,

Let's try a couple of things to get that working for you:

1. Startup your system in SAFE MODE by pressing F8 repeatedly
while your system is booting up after you've shut down your system

2. Log in with an account you've created as a "Computer Administrator"
account that you'll use to play the game, but don't use a Limited account.
