I installed a new CD/DVD combo drive, but unfortunately we can't get
DVDs (movies or data) to read!

It DOES read CDs -- I installed all the Nero and PowerDVD software that
came with the new drive, then followed all the instructions to make
sure we have the latest driver and software updates (Windows is also up
to date).

I also used a Windows tool to check that we had a codec(?) installed.

It's GIGABYTE drive.

If you installed the PoweDVD software and the new drive won't read
DVD's, the drive is defective. Return it. Combo drives use two
different lasers to handle CD's and DVD's; the one for DVD's on your
drive doesn't work.
