Can't format External HDD on Win XP

I have Win XP Home Sp1, all updates. My new AcomData
external hard drive - which is supposed to work on USB2
and firewire, both of which I have - is recognized by XP
as a removable storage device, 4 drives showing up in
both Disk Mgt and Explorer. When I try to format the
drive, XP says there is no disk in the drive. I have
gone into the Phoenix bios and made sure USB2 devices are
active. There is, however, no selection for mass storage.
The drive case is sealed, so I can't remove it and
install it onto an IDE slot on my motherboard, as some
other postings such as this suggest.
On another PC, the drive doesn't show up all. Both PCs
are HP Pavilions, only a few months old.
No XP drivers came with the drive. The AcomData
technician said they aren't needed.
Can anyone help on this one?

I too have a new AcomData external hard drive with both
USB2 and firewire. I have an HP and Gateway, both with
XP-HP I want to use with firewire(has USB too) and
Gateway has only USB. After following directions for
installation, I don't get message from both computers
saying found new hardware. I can hear motor running on
hard drive, but isn't the light supposed to come on front
of hard drive? I'm thinking I have a faulty drive or am
I missing something that I should try? Nothing shows up
under Disk Management and no new drive letter shows up
under My Computer. I will be contacting manufacturer
tomarrow for advise. Store won't return-past 14 days or
exchange because I cut off upc for rebate. urgh!! Hope
someone has some suggestions to help get this running!!
Thanks
