Can't format a DVD+RW

I had to do an operating system restore last week, and now I can't
format a DVD+RW. I used to be able to go to My Computer and right
click on the DVD drive, and one of the menu options was Format. Now
it isn't there. Software that tries to format the DVD locks up
completely - the mouse won't move and I have to use the power switch.

How can I get the DVD formatting back?

Windows XP has no ability to write to DVD media.

What software are you using to write with and what format are you trying to
accomplish? Did you actually mean to say "erase"? Even so, that would only apply
to CD media.

I'm using Nero 6.6 and it has no "format" option on the menu you cite, for DVD
or CD media. The only format option in Nero is to create the disc in UDF or
UDF/ISO format for use on any Windows OS.

We need clarification and a few more details.

Your real question may be off-topic to this newsgroup.

I'm not sure what that was. Perhaps it was from Sonic, but I also
Nero installed, and I was having so many problems with the DVD that I
thought that they were fighting over the DVD, so I removed Sonic
MyDVD. I'll reinstall it and see.

Isn't there anything built into windows XP for formatting a DVD?

I don't know what I was using, I could right click on the drive under
MyComputer, and Format was one of the options on the menu. I do
remember that it was UDF 1.50.

No. XP has not built in support for managing DVD's.

I've written to tech support for my drive and for my backup software.
Maybe I'll hear something tomorrow.

The problem is worse than I thought. I thought it was just unable to
format a DVD+RW. Therefore, I tried writing to a DVD-R. It locked up
completely, requiring power down. I uninstalled and reinstalled the
DVD drive, no improvement. I'm still waiting to hear from the drive
maker (Sony) and the backup program tech support.
