Since both machines are started up as admin (both have admin rights),
I would think that adding the admin group is all that's necessary to
allow sharing between the two machines. I did just that and it still
didn't allow any file and print sharing transactions between the two
machines - but I could 'see' them in the same workgroup together.
However, playing with it some more and doing some more research on the
newsgroups, I stumbled upon the following command that I could enter
on the command prompt:
C:\>net share ipc$
...once I did that command on both PCs, that allowed either machine
access to the other's drives and printers once I setup them up as a
shared drive on the network. Using that command, I now have file and
print sharing between the two PCs - so my near term goal has been met.
I guess my follow-up question would be: If both machines are setup to
have admin rights and admins have been added to the authorized groups
to have access, why didn't that work in the first place? Also, please
let me know if by using the 'net share ipc$' command that I've allowed
too much access. In this case, it's not that important since the user
of the networked PCs is the same user - it just setup as a new machine
and its old print/fileserver PC. But I'd still like to know how to
set this up in the future to allow and restrict some drives on a
personal home network, too.
