on my start menu the run icon has disappeared and internet explorer has gone
with it even though it still runs.

To restore the Run command to your Start menu:

Control Panel > Taskbar and Start Menu > Start Menu tab > Start Menu -
Customize button > Advanced tab > 'Start menu items' > check mark in
'Run command'

To restore Internet Explorer to your Start menu:

Control Panel > Taskbar and Start Menu > Start Menu tab > Start Menu -
Customize button > General tab > 'Show on Start menu' > check mark in
Internet > select Internet Explorer

OTOH, if this is your work computer, your System Administrator can
prevent both items from appearing in your Start menu.
