I've always been able to find pst and pab files in older versions but in 2003
I can't fine them anywhere.

I've looked where the help file claims they should be and I've done a search
for *.pst and *.pab and absolutely nothing come back.

I used the standard install when I loaded 2003, nothing special or different.

I've already lost my mail and address book from one lap top and I'd really
like to not lose those files a second time when I move off of this machine.

SEarch using hidden files/folders in Windows search. Depending on the version you used, the .pab may not exist as it has been extinct for several versions.

pab and pst files? what are personal folders and address book/contacts
called these days?

All contact information is contained in the .pst file. The .pab file has been obsolete since outlook 2000.

I run a search (including hidden files) for *.pst and nothiing is returned.
this has happened on 2 different laptops.

if you use Control Panel->MAil Icon->Accounts, can you see the location of the .pst file?
