Can't find Normal.dot

I am using Office 2000 (under Windows XP Home). When I open any new document
the document window shows up with garbage characters in the document. These
characters are always the same, the letters qwerty. It looks to me like
somebody typed these in a document and somehow saved it under Normal.dot. I
thought I could solve the problem by deleting the Normal.dot file and
letting Word renew it. However I cannot locate Normal.dot anywhere on my
computer. Any ideas?

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...ocNotBlank.htm. The
first paragraph under "Method 1" may explain why you're having trouble
finding the file.

Try here:

C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Good luck!

Another way to locate Normal.dot is from the templates dialog:
Right-click on the template for a blank document, then choose "Properties" from the context menu, and copy the file path to the
clipboard (Ctrl+C).
You can then paste it (Ctrl+V) into the "File > Open" dialog or the Windows Explorer.

Greetings,
Klaus
