Check the jumper on the new CD/DVD drive, especially if it's on the same
cable as the hard drive.

Check to see if all cables are correctly connected (seated) to their
connector at both ends (especially IDE.) Several motherboards place
the RAM near the IDE cable connectors and the cable can be
"disconnected" easily.

Do you have the hard drive on the same IDE data cable as another
drive? Would that now be the CD drive that shares the same IDE data
cable? If so, configure the hard drive as master and CD as slave.
You could try to set BOTH to cable select but sometimes the drives
aren't compatible with each other (regarding the timing and forcing
the other to be slave).

After changing your hardware setup, do you hear the hard drive spin
up? It should make a whine noise as it starts to spin up and come up
to speed.

I the IDE cable ends do not provide a pull-tab (i.e., a plastic strip
that is attached to the phenolic header on the end of the cable), it
is possible that you yanking on the cable itself has separated the
cable from the pins in the header connector that pierce through the
insulation to make contact with the wires inside the cable. With
pull-tabs, yanking on the cables can result in damaging them. If you
have another IDE cable, try that one. Make sure you got pin 1 lined
up on both the mobo and hard drive connector; that is, pin 1 on the
mobo's header needs to be connected to pin 1 on the hard drive
connector. The cable is probably marked (with red) for pin1. Some
cables are cheap in not provided polarized connector ends so it is
possible you got the data cable reversed.

Set the cd drive to slave..............................
If you have an observable bios screen that assigns the ide devices, both
must show before XP will see both. You don't have to wait till XP boots if
that's the case.

If the hard drive is Western Digital, you will have to set the hard drive
jumper to master with slave present.

ASSUMING, all worked well before, go back & set jumper on new cd drive
the same as it was on older cd drive. s

Yes, you need to check the jumpers on both the CD and the hard drive.
If you want to use Cable Select then both "drives" must use the jumper
for Cable Select and the hard drive needs to be using the "last" IDE
connector at the end of the IDE cable.

Otherwise, set the hard drive to "Master" and CD to "Slave."
