The image file that I have displayed on the desktop is nowhere to be found.
When I go to control panel/display/desktop/background ---- the image file is
one of the choices in a drop down menu. I wish to copy this image file to
another computer but I can't locate it on the computer?? I've tried a
"search" but no luck.

You didn't search properly.

Look in WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper and WINDOWS\Resources\Themes

Those locations only display the standard wallpapers or themes that come
with windows. Any picture can be made into desktop wallpaper and windows
does not store in in the windows\web\wallpaper folder. So for the OP, right
click on the desktop, click properties, highlight the desktop picture and
click on the Browse button, that should show the location of the picture
file.
