"can't find cdrom" error

new computer with XP pro. DVDrom and CDRW both come up
with "can't find cdrom" error for applications that
require a cd to be in the drive during use. They both
install apps fine. And in driver profiles they both show
up correctly. Never got this error while ME was on the
system. Any guess as to why I have this problem. My
neighbor who also has XP gets this error with his dvdrom,
he restarts the computer while leaving the disc in the
drive and then it works fine. Mine is hopeless even with
a restart it doesn't work.
