Trying to load RTM fresh install to new blank HDD.
Hangs looking for a driver for the CD or DVD drive.
This is weird since the friggin DVD it is reading from
is the only one in the system. Anyone know what Vista
is really looking for here? I have never had to manually
load a driver for a CD or DVD since Windows 95 or so.

You mean driver for your CD or DVD writer. Many of the CD or DVD writers
don't have a driver per se. They do have firmware updates.

Tell us what CD or DVD writer you're using.

Also when you say hangs looking for a driver if they don't use a driver they
aren't "hanging looking for a driver."

Try following directions in this MSKB carefully and tell us what happens
then.

CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive appears to be missing after you install
Windows XP or Windows Vista Beta 2
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;320553

If you carefully go to those locations make suer you delete any upper or
lower filter values then try your DVD writer or CD writer.

Precisely. The existing drive's firmware may need to be updated.

Rick--

How is replacing the hardware precisely like updating the firmware? Most DVD
drive companies advise updating the firmware as a last resort actually.
It's no big deal but from the OP's somewhat scrambled post, it's not clear
what his problem actually is. A huge percent of times with posts like his,
the problem is basically that he can't get his optical drives to work at
some point. Filter values get introduce commonly into the reg--I can't
imagine you haven't seen it happen as much time as you spend with boxes.

I would have a good time watching you search for drivers for my DVD writers
but you'd search forever because they don't have drivers. They do have a
firmware update available but can run very well without it being applied.

They do not have drivers.

You seem to have equated a firmware update with Jared's report of simply
replacing his optical drives and whether he had to or not I have no idea
from his post. He could have had filter values in the reg per the KB he
simply didn't know to delete.

Fixed it. Installed a new DVD-RW and now it works fine. Weird though. XP
had no issues at all with the existing DVD-R drive I was using. Thanks for
the tips though..

Homer I'm glad your new DVD-RW is working and I hope every burn is a good
one, but I'd be curious to know if before you got it there were any filter
values in the registry. If they are ever there, they can be nuked without
worrying about backing them up.

They can jam up burning software at any point--opening up, closing, trying
to select a file to burn--like an .iso for example and it doesn't matter
whose it is --Nero, Roxio, etc.

Good luck,

CH

Chad,
I have no clue what you are talking about. This was a fresh install to a
blank hard drive in a "system" that worked fine with XP, not an upgrade.
Hence there was no registry...yet. It turns out that Vista is really,
really picky as to the DVD you use to install it from. I ultimatly had to
go through no less than 4 known good drives before I found one (a new
Sony) that worked. I really think that is weird. It is like Vista
leaves out basic drivers for some rather standard DVD drives.

But aren't the drivers in this case in the firmware of the cd drives and not
in either XP or Vista?

I would be suspicious of the cabling. I have read that Vista is showing
narrower tolerances and there are hardware devices that function under XP
and not under Vista due to that. Do you have cables you can swap out to
check with?

The driver for all cd/dvd drives is cdrom.sys. Why Vista cannot detect
certain drives after installation is most odd indeed.

Jane, not plain 64 bit enabled :-)
