I was online and got an error message that previously
(before reinstalling windows 2000) had indicated my puter
had the blaster worm. So I freaked out a little and
instantly ran the Symantec Blaster Worm Removal Tool
(while still online). While it was scanning my system, I
was booted and clicked reconnect. When the tool finished
(it did detect the virus), it gave me a url to download a
patch to keep my system from being vulnerable. I clicked
the url and was prompted to connect again. The port
opened and my modem began dialing. After a minute or so,
I get an error message: cannot establish a connection.
So I delete my dial up connection and ran the internet
connection wizard to create a new one. It began dialing
to search for local carriers. Again I got the: cannot
establish a connection. Tried a manual connection...same
thing. I've now been working with a microsoft tech on the
problem for about 2-3 weeks with no resolution. Windows
detects my modem and says it's running properly. I've
uninstalled com ports and my modem and let windows
reinstall it. I even reinstalled windows 2000
again...nothing works.I've tried a dozen different things
instructed by the tech i'm working with...no resolution.
The wierd thing is that the internet connection says its
dialing, but I picked up a phone that's sharing the line
and there's no noise indicating that it is. Now,
everytime I try something else, the result is the same.
After a minute or so, I get the error message:
Error 678: There was no answer.
According to Microsoft, this error message occurs when the
ISP your dialing is a long-distance number AND you don't
have long-distance service on your line. The thing is I'm
dialing local numbers or 800 numbers, so it makes no sense.
I've been very patient so far, but I'm starting to get
frustrated. If anyone has any suggestions, or even
better, solutions, it would be greatly appreciated.
