Hi,

I'm running XP on my computer. I want to email 50 photos to another person.
My only way of transferring these files to this person is by email as I
don't have a memory card reader or a blank CD-RW disc. I don't want to share
these photos on a public website either. Eventhough the 50 files were zipped
up using winzip, the resulting zip file took too long to email - and
consequently my outlook program stoped responding. The total size of my
photos are approx 80MB. The files were zipped up using normal compression.
I even tried maximum compression but I had no success. Strangely enough,
when my photos are converted to the zip file, this file is still showing 80MB
when I highlight it. By the way, I'm only using the evaluation version of
Winzip - would this make a difference?

Is there a limit to how much a persons smtp mail server will allow or is
this controlled by my ISP. Is there any compression software out there that
will reduced the size of my photos from 80MB to around 6MB thereby enabling
me to email these photos? I could email these photos in portions but I don't
want this.

Please note, I'm using a 2Mbps DSL broadand connection.

All suggestions welcome.

I would suggest that you upload the file/s
to the following site.

"YouSendIt"
http://www.yousendit.com/

All you have to do is enter an e-mail
address in the "To:" (Recipient) field
and click the "Browse" button to select
the file you wish to upload. Then click
the "Send It" button.

The next screen that appears will give
you the download link. Just copy/paste
it into the message to your recipients
who can download and view the file on
their computer.

You cannot compress (zip) photo files (.jpg) because these files are already
highly compressed. So your results trying to compress them are as expected
and no compression software available to do better.
Yes there is usually a limit controlled by your ISP and just as important,
the receiver ISP.
The solution provided by John Inzer is the way to go.

Many thanks for the YouSendIt link. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for
YouSendIt to upload my WinZip file containing the photos. As my DSL
broadband connection is not symmetrical, my upload speed is much slower than
my download speed. My upload speed is only around 256Kbps. This could be
the reason for the delay along with the fact that the combined zipped file is
approx 82 MB. However, this is still lower than the specified 100 MB listed
on YouSendIT. It looks at this stage that it will not work as I'm waiting
indefinitely. I will have to end the wait soon. It looks at this stage that
I may have to resort to Remote Desktop or VPN access. If all fails, I will
back up my photos on a blank external disk and just post it off to the
receipient. I'm disappointed with YouSendIT on this regard as I thought it
looked very like a possible solution at first. While the file is being
uploaded, YouSendIT should display a message indicating how long the process
would take. It's very hard to wait indefinitely for something that may never
work at the end.

the moment, the upload process for YouSendIT is extremely slow and I may have
to end it soon.

I agree with what you previously said about the ISP controlling the limit
size of both the sender and receiver as these limits can be applied on the
mailboxes. It looks like I will have to resort to Remote desktop or VPN now.
The YouSendIT doesn't appear to be working. By the way, if I converted my
jpeg photos to another file format and then compressed them using WinZip
would it make any difference?

If YouSendIT works eventually, I will let you know.

It has now worked. I tried it again by installing the YouSendIT desktop
application @ http://www.yousendit.com/cms/standalone-app and it uploaded my
file big file in less than an hour. Unlike the other method, it gave a
snapshot of the upload progress which was nice. It has saved me the hassle
in configuring my Windows XP workstation as a VPN server or allowing remote
desktop or assistance in order to enable the recipient to remotely access my
computer and getting the file that way . The upload speed is slow in
comparison to download speeds in an ADSL broadband connection. I will
welcome the day when SDSL and VDSL are available to me.

Anyway, many thanks for resolving this issue.

Why do you have to send everything at once? Why not split it up into
three or four separate zip files, and email them separately?

That's exactly how long it should take at 256kbps.

As you've found, uploading a large amount of data (and 80MB is a large
amount of data) is problematic. Most non-commercial accounts have
similar limited upload bandwidth (because of network provisioning and
also, to be honest, to discourage home-hosted web sites).

If you have gigabytes to share, it's hard to beat the bandwidth of
a DVD and a postage stamp. ;-)

BTW, the reason that WinZip did not compress your .jpg's much is that
the JPEG file format is *already* compressed, and there is not much
remaining redundancy that WinZip (or any other lossless compressor)
can exploit.
