Hi,

I have a problem ejecting my external HDD connected to my XP SP2 via
USB: when trying “Safely Remove Hardware > Safely remove USB Mass
Storage device” I got a message box which says “The device ‘Generic
Volume’ cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again
later"

According to the Process Explorer there is no handles open to the
drive. Unlocker app doesn't help either. Does anybody know what else
could it be/what can I try? Or is it just another Microsoft bug?

Thanks in advance

Reboot. Defrag your external hard drive. Reboot again. Remove the drive.

I just installed a new 1TB drive that did the same thing until I updated my
USB to 2.0. Now it works great!
Maybe you are using USB 1.1 and that is just a circumstance of that?

Why doesn't it have a drive letter such as 'f' or 'g'?

Using Task Manager/Kill explorer then/File/New Task/type in
explorer/enter

Then try "Safely Remove Hardware"...usual procedure.

Should work...works for me if "Unlocker" doesn't.

dlorent,
Close all instances of Windows Explorer displaying any folder of that drive.
If any folder tree shows that drive expanded, collapse that drive.

No it's USB 2.0. It only happens sometimes, so I doubt it's related to
the interface.

Why do you think it doesn't have a drive letter such as 'f' or 'g'?

>Kill explorer

Doug, thanks, tried that - didn't have any effect, still the same
issue. If it was explorer though, woudn't it be shown by Porcess
Explorer/Unlocker?

> Close all instances of Windows Explorer

I don't use Windows Explorer at all. Again, if it was opened it
would've been spotted by PE/Ulocker

Until a solution is found, I guess you will have to leave the
USB drive attached until you shut the computer down and then
remove it.

I would yank it out anyway and chance that there would be no
repercussions if there was nothing non-essential or important on
the drive...but that's just me.
