Can't edit or rename index.htm (local) to index.html (remote)

I've been able to edit my home page but now can't. I have index.htm on my
local machine, and index.html on the remote. If I try to rename the local
index.htm to .html I get this error message: "Front Page cannot save this
document because a file with the same name exists at this location. Please
enter a different name and try again."

When I open the remote index.html and edit it, I can't save it; I get the
same error message. Of course as soon as I rename either file, the server
doesn't see it as the home page.

I tried deleting the remote home page and reloading the whole site, but the
upload aborted (right at the end - grr) and said that a folder at the server
with a name that I can't recall (but had \index_files or something like that
in the name) didn't exist and that the upload could not proceed.

I am stumped. Any suggestions welcome.

Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm
and download FP Cleaner.
Run the functions that clear the FrontPage temporary files
and the Cache(.web) files.

Then open FrontPage ( FP Cleaner will do it for you ) and then
open your "local" web. ( the one on your machine )
Recalculate hyperlinks.
Then rename index.htm to index.html
Let FrontPage update hyperlinks when prompted.
Then Publish your web to the server.
When it's done, open the server version and delete index.htm

Thanks - I ran the program, but when I tried to rename the index.htm file on
my computer to index.html, I got the following message:

Server error: Cannot rename "C:\(directory)\(website)\index_files" to
"C:\(directory)\(website)\index_files": destination already exists.

I then tried the "set as home page" command on the "index.htm" (not ".html")
file on the remote site, and it renamed the previous home page (index.html)
as "index_old.html" and tried to rename the (uploaded new) "index.htm" to
"index.html" but aborted and gave me another error message, which flashed and
disappeared before I could write it down.

Arrgh.

Ideas? Thanks again.

I tried to rename the file in the folders index while in FP.

Update - although when I tried renaming the file as you suggested it
wouldn't, when I went to publish anyway (some other changes on other pages)
it took my local .htm file and asked if I wanted to replace the remote .html.
When I said yes, it did, so problem solved. I guess the cache clearing and
the FP Cleaner exercise did the trick. Thanks!
