I need to have a hyperlink over some text that shouldn't
be underlined, but cannot find anything straightforward to
do to meet the need. Surely this is solveable: it seems
such an obvious problem. Please help!

Make the hyperlink to the box surrounding the text and not the text.

PowerPoint will always underline text hyperlinks, but you have a few
options. If the text that you want to be the link is the only text in a
text box, then you can make that text box the hyperlink, rather than the
text within the text box. Alternatively, you can create a shape over the
text and set its properties to No Line and No Fill (so you can't see it).
Then you can make this invisible shape be the hyperlink. To make a shape
a hyperlink, right click on the shape (if the shape has text in it, be
sure to right click on the edge of the shape) and click on Hyperlink or
Action Settings.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

PowerPoint does not currently have the capability that you are looking for.
Hyperlink text is always indicated with an underline and color change taken
from the color scheme for the slide. You can change the color by changing
the color scheme but the text will always be underlined.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) have some suggestions about
what options PowerPoint should provide for the handling and formatting of
hyperlink text, don't forget to send your feedback to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
