Can't Drag & Drop--More Info

Hi All,

I reported yesterday in this forum that I could not drag & drop in Windows
Mail between newsgroups and got a reply that it did work so..............I
bit the bullet and worked with Microsoft Tech support. The tech used
easyassist to access my laptop and was able to see the problem.

We also accessed my desktop which has not been upgraded and saw that drag &
drop between newsgroups works fine in OE6. Despite our efforts which
basically boiled down to uninstalling and re-installing the newsgroup
accounts, there was no resolution to the problem.

So...............I am open to any suggestions from others who may be having
the same problem PARTICULARLY if you have found a solution

Perhaps if you described the exact steps of what you are trying to do, we
could figure out what you mean and what isn't working.

Keep a single thread and don't start lots of them.

Hi Steve,

I select a message in one newsgroup and drag to another. A 'plus' sign
appears. The message opens in the new newsgroup, I can edit if I wish or
not and then press 'Send' and the message posts in the new newsgroup.

It worked in OE6, it does not work in my version of Windows Mail.

I started a new thread because I felt the other one was essentially closed
with the response that 'It works fine here' and I had further information.

Okay, I understand the issue now. I can't reproduce the problem either.

You can try re-registering dlls and see if that helps.

Start | Search (or Run) and try

regsvr32 ole32.dll

if that doesn't do anything then try:

regsvr32 oleau32.dll
regsvr32 olecli32.dll
regsvr32 olesvr32.dll

And if that doesn't fix it, then I'm at a loss at the moment.

Hi Steve,

I am getting nothing but error messages when I try this. Do I have to have
everything shut down before doing it?

For instance with 'regsvr32 ole32.dll' I get the error message:

The module "ole32.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer
failed with error code 0x80070005.

The next error message with 'regsvr32 oleau32.dll' is:

The module "oleau32.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored
at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary
or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found.

So, does everything have to be shut down?

Hello,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft newsgroup and thanks for Steve's key
in.

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: the new messages created
by dragging text are in plain text format. If I'm off base, please feel
free to let me know.

The problem you described doesn't happen in my test. However, I did some
further research. The format of the newly created message/mail is
controlled by the following keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail\News\Message Send HTML
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Mail\Message Send HTML

Here are the steps of editing registry keys:
1.Click "Start"->"Run"
2.Type regedit and click ok.
3.Expand keys one by one : HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software->Microsoft->Windows
Mail->News
4.Double click "Message Send HTML" and set the value to "1"
5.Repeat steps 3 to 4 on HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
Mail\Mail\Message Send HTML

Try to do the drag and drop and let's if see something has changed.

Please let me know if you have any other concerns, or need anything else.

Hi Sean,

Her issue was not lack of HTML, but rather the lack of a message being
opened via the method she used.

Which suggested to me a problem, with OLE automation.

nah. That didn't work. I'm getting the same error. They've changed some
things in Vista and some dlls won't register anymore.

Try running a cmd prompt as Adminstrator and in the box type

sfc /scannow

That will run system file checker and might fix it.

Hi Sean,

I did follow these directions and both keys were already set to '1' so there
was nothing to change.
