When I go to a website and attempt to downoad a zip file, I get a white
screen with a red x in the upper left hand corner. This doesn't happen with
any other type of file: exe, jpg, etc.
I have disabled McAffee firewall and virus scan and this type of file is
still blocked. Anyone know what is happening. This just started. Didn't start
until recently.

I tried that, but I still get a white screen with a red x ONLY when I try to
download a zip file. All other downloads work fine. Any other ideas? Thanks,

I followed these directions:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extensions
Make a note of the contents of the Extensions key.
4. On the Edit menu, click Delete. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
5. On the File menu, click Exit.
6. Search for and rename the file that is listed in the registry key that
you deleted in Step 3. To do so, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
b. Click All files and folders.
c. Type the filename that you noted in step 3 in the All or part of the
filename box, and then click Search.
d. Right-click the file that is on the right pane of the search dialog box,
and then click Rename.
e. Type a new extension for the file, for example, Filename.bak.
NOTE: If you do not complete this step, the file may recreate the registry
key when you restart the computer.
7. Restart your computer.

The only thing under Extensions was ".pdf". I deleted that but the rest of
the instructions were confusing and I don't know what to search for???

By the way, I have no trouble downloading zip files on my laptop that is
connected to the internet through a hub along with my machine that is having
trouble. Is it possible that I have a setting on my machine that is
specifically blocking files with a .zip extension? Thanks for your help. I've

Alan,
I just went to several different sites offering downloadable zip files and
all of them gave me the same red box on white screen. When I right click on
the red box it gives me the same path to the zip file that shows in the
address bar, if this is of any help.

OK. You seem to have done everything correctly.
As you didn't have a file referenced in any of the extensions, there
would be no need to search as in 6.

I don't know what you could have that may block .zip files.
I am afraid I am at a loss.

anyway:

Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

Actually, it probably doesn't apply because the file simply won't download.
Is there somewhere I can look where I'm telling IE not to accept zip files?

P4 3GHz
1 gig RAM

Yes, it was doubtful.

There is nowhere I can think of that IE can be told to not accept zip
files.
Do you have a firewall or other security software that could be
blocking .zip files?

If there is some Registry entry that is blocking downloads, there is
normally a restrictions message, rather than just a red X.
You might try Regmon to see what accesses are being made.
It takes a little time to get the hang of.
