Suddenly I am only able to download images as bitmap images even though they
are jpeg or tiff and I can't figure out why.

Hi jimryb :-)

First, clear the TIF's and try again:

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

If the above does not work, then try the following:

Cannot save target as BMP or JPEG etc

The solution that seems to work for about 98% of such problems the time:
IE-Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files (in the TIF section)
Clear recycle bin to finish getting rid of the files.

However, if it doesn't, close IE and reopen and do it again. Also it has
been reported that clearing cookies helps, but be sure to save those you
need.

If still no joy, try the following...

If the above fails, then try here:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

also......

Another possibility is that you have checked Do not save encrypted pages to
disk on the Advanced tab of Tools | Options, and the picture is on a page
reached by a secure https:// connection.

and………

Why IE will only let you save as BMP

Finally some documentation regarding what I noticed years ago in that there
was a limitation to how many records could be stored in the index.dat files!
The limitation seems to be the number of folders the index.dat file can store
which subdivide the cached files in the TIF folder. (In this case, 32
folders max). There also may be other limitations to that I haven't
recognized.

This is why I limited CacheSentry's maximum cache size setting value to 300MB
when I first released it in 1997 - because I knew there was a limit in the
index.dat file that I didn't want users running up against. Users complained
about the low max setting so I slowly raised it over the years (its currently
1 gigabyte in CacheSentry Pro) but the index.dat record number limitation
still exists, so I guess users still need to be warned about it until IE7 is
released.
