Can't download in IE6

I can't download anything in IE6. I am running IE6 SP1 on XP. When I left click on a link I want to download from the file name appears in the bottom left corner of the browser, but nothing happens. If I right click and select "open in new window" I get a blank window.

This problem occurs with all the file types I have tried to download in the last few days (mainly .zip). I am able to download windows updates through Windows Update, but when I tried to download IE6 SP1 manually from microsoft I had the same problem. I have run virus scans, updated windows to latest spec and deleted all temporary interet files, but no luck. Please help!
