I'm using a laptop for both work and home. At work I'm connected to a LAN.
Internet works ok on the LAN. When i connect to the internet at home, the
connection is fine, but when open up I.E the page can't be dispalyed. I've
changed the settings to bypass the proxy server etc. Any help would be
great. Many thanks

Hi David :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, which really is a
must when asking for help in the newsgroups, nor provide detailed wording of
the error message, but, try the following as it may apply to your OS and see
if it helps. If you cannot access the websites from your laptop you will
need to use another computer to printout the information.

IE6 opens blank/empty/seethrough windows or have to refresh to see contents:

Can't Connect to Internet With Internet Explorer

Error: "Page cannot be displayed" (Server or DNS error)
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/16.html
You may need to scroll down the page to find the text on this website.

Can't display page (Server or DNS error) or "Internet Explorer could not
open the search page" / unable to view web pages / old versions of web pages
displayed
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers.htm#dns

Check for a hosts file (justs "hosts" not hosts.sam or lmhosts) in these
locations:
Windows XP. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K. C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME. C:\WINDOWS
You may have to enable the viewing of hidden files.

Rename your HOSTS file to OLDHOSTS and see if the problem persists.

Hope this helps.
