can't detect mouse

I upgraded an old Immer computer from Win95 to 2000, and
lost the mouse connection. The old mouse was on a PCI
parallel port; Win2000 cannot ID drivers for either the
mouse or the port. I'd much rather use an optical mouse I
have, connected in the regular jack. I've downloaded the
driver, but Win2000 still cannot detect the mouse: There's
no cursor at startup.

Anyone have any idea what may be going on, or how I can
fix it?

I think you mean the old mouse was on a serial port and the new one is a
PS/2 mouse. Look in the BIOS to ensure the PS/2 port is actually enabled.
