can't delete shell extensions.dll

hey all, hope your sundays are going well. for some reason, when i went to
run avg's a/v & ad-aware, they both had issues; one said no connection.
anyway, i decided to remove them & reinstall; that didn't work so i
installed avira a/v instead., but when i get to the install portion of
ad-aware, it keeps saying "the source installation package for the product
ad-aware is out of sync with the client package. try installing again using
a valid copy of the install package ad-aware.msi.

so i try & delete the few remaining files in explorer of the old ad-aware &
it keeps saying cannot delete shell extensions file.dll.

i googled it & found many programs to remove dlls but don't want to get into
that.

so not sure how both it & avg had issues this morning, but i could not get
avg back & installed the other & now have the issues you see described
above.

any ideas as to how to get this d/l'ed & installed or know of another to
use instead of avg ?

many thanks ia

Hello Dallas,

It seems possible that your Windows installation has
been deliberately damaged by a trojan
(Vundo, along any uninvited guests.
(SDBot and ZLOB, all protected by a rootkit.)) so as to prevent you updating
your system or
removing the trojan.

Scan your computer now online and clean it for free!

A very good antimalware app are SUPERAntiSpyware (SAS)
and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) .

There is a free version (on demand scanning only:

hi ??ç?l & thanks for all this

i already have & ran both the super anit-spyware & the malware program -
the latter found nothing & the former found 2 minor things which were
removed. I rebooted & tried the adaware d/l again & still it won't work. it
is saying i need to go to add/remove, but there is neither ad-aware or
lavasoft. i did find it in program files, but that's when i get the message
that i cannot delete shell extensions.dll & it tells me something about
making sure the disk is not full or write protected or that the file is not
in use. did that this afternoon & am now running the scanner you provided
below, onecare....

it's only 7% in so i'll post again when it finishes

thanks again!

thanks again but let me ask you this; in running the onecare live scanner,
is it supposed t show the results of the scan ? I ask as i have now ran it
twice, but left the room each time as it takes a long, long time to run, but
when i return, it is finished & defaults to the next page but I see no
results or even a results page of the scan. or does it remove whatever
automatically ? i think it would give the results of the scan - so what am i
doing wrong ? i mean, i just start it, leave, come back & no results

thanks

well, 3rd time is a charm, i guess. i had a dr's appt. & left the scan
running & when i checked it, it gave the results - no spyware or malware - &
when I clicked next, that is the page the prior 2 scans defaulted to without
the results page.
so when i feel better, later i hope, i will try the installation again.
well, before that, i will try & delete the shell extension dll as that must
be what is holding up the installation of a new one

let me do that now & report the results of that.

nope, that didn't resolve it either as it says the same as i posted
previously. "that i cannot delete shell extensions.dll & it tells me
something about making sure the disk is not full or write protected or that
the file is not
in use."

Hi Dallas,

Restart the computer into Safe Mode to then eradicate the pest

Safe mode prevents some, but by no means all--spyware services from running.
It is an excellent way to get started if something is resistant to cleaning
in normal mode, but it may not be all that is needed.

In Safe mode try to remove it with Revo Uninstaller, then run CCleaner's
registry cleaner.

<http://www.revouninstaller.com/>
Try in Tools -> Optimization -. Junk Files Cleaner – Scan - Delete

<http://www.ccleaner.com>
Note, uncheck Yahoos Toolbar

Download the basic version via
<http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx>
The basic version does not contain the disgusted Toolbar
The best part is that it's fast! (normally taking less than a second to run)
and Free.

Uncheck:

In the INTERNET EXPLORER:
Last Download Location .- Uncheck
Autocomplete Form History .- Uncheck

In the WINDOWS EXPLORER:
Recent Documents .- Uncheck

In the SYSTEM:
Clipboard .- Uncheck
Memory Dumps .- Uncheck
Windows Log Files .- Uncheck
Start Menu Shortcuts .- Uncheck
Desktop Shortcuts .- Uncheck

In the UTILITIES category, uncheck WindowsDefender. Having this checked
removes the history of when the last scan was run.

DO NOT USE ANY Advanced cleaning options.
Make sure you go to Options > Advanced and uncheck the box to " Only delete
files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" before running a scan.

Suggest saving the changes until you get to know it and feel comfortable.
-=-

And remove all temporarily junk.

Good luck

hi ??ç?l,

thanks but even your good luck wishes were not enough, so far that is!

i did all you said, entered in safe mode to run the uninstaller, but
whether i signed in w/ my username or as administrator, it kept saying i had
no internet connection for anything i tried; ie & outlook express. so i
logged out 7 again back in & tried the uninstaller in the normal mode, but
of all the programs it had listed, none were either the adaware of lavasoft.
i tried the search mode as well - no dice.(pssst, bet you wish now you
wouldn't have stepped up to help me!)

i did the ccleaner & the shell ext.dll is still there - whew !

thanks again & if still interested in helping , any other ideas ?

Hi Dallas,

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. At this point, I would seriously consider a
clean install.... but before that, other folks may have additional ideas for
you; hope this helps a bit, take a look at this

Ad-Aware – <http://www.lavasoftusa.com>

Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential problem

well, much thanks for your help & will look at that info; think i already
saw it before posting, but will double check.

no, it seems the locals here are angry with me as i told of someone here
that only came here to rag on me for not googling things first & he claimed
my other post was off topic, even tho' i have found many on here that are
off topic, while he said zip to them. and this is a place to help & he
wasn't in the mood for helping, only for ragging & being sarcastic. he
apparently never read luke 6:31. until i told him off, he had not posted a
single iota of advice for anyone some 30-40 posts newer than mine, & after i
called him out, he then posted a one, sarcastic liner "try www.google.com"
to another here simply looking for help.

i always try googling it, but since i am a pc dimwit, 95% of the time, i
don't understand the info provided. so be it i guess.

again, many thanks & if ever i get this resolved, which i doubt, i'll let
you know.
