For anyone else who ever encounters this issue, here's what I did. It was
cumbersome, but I was able to save my old emails.
I created a New Outlook Data file, and opened it in Outlook so that it was
positioned in the Folders list along with the old/corrupt file. I dragged the
emails into one of the mail folders in the new file. And even though an error
message told me that they could not be copied, it had copied them anyway. For
the other item types (appts, tasks, notes, etc.) I exported them and then
imported them into the new file. Hope this helps someone!
