In an effort to save HD space ( I'm losing 1 GB every few days, and System
Restore is gaining 2), I'm trying to get rid of excess baggage.

In Computer - Program Files, it steadfastly refuses to be deleted. Says I
need permission! From whom; my mother?

It uses 2 MBs and I have no use for it. Computer also will not give up the
remains of Quick Time even after being disabled long ago.

Thanks for the quick reply. Guess I'm stuck with MM, huh.
Have been using cleanup and defragment, and have had to use S. Restore to
eradicate a Trojan that AVG let through - twice, so disabling is out. I've
switched to Avast and my machine is running much quieter. Is there a
connection?
-- QuickTime was not in the uninstall list in Control Panel. I can't
remember why or how it disappeared, but it's gone; except for a trace in
Programs that sticks.
URGE likewise went away on its own; to be replaced with Media Centre. I can
live with that.
Without fully understanding what System Restore is I know that it has 35 GBs
out of 50 GBs total HD usage.
Following "Fix it Geek's" advice on reducing S.R. usage to 10 GBs, I again
found that I'm not allowed to - Invalid Request.
All I can do is watch Gigs vanish on my already underpowered 238 GB computer.
Ps - It rates 2 on the performance chart and can't run AERO. Remember Dell
and spread the word.

Looked at the link you gave. It appears I'm at the 15% SR usage. In Restore
Centre couldn't find info on Restore Points, but remember once seeing it.
Where the hell is it?
As I looked in Restore Centre just now it had the current time/date as the
latest point. Is that significant?
As stated earlier, going through the involved Vssadmin route, I'm not
allowed resetting, so any help with finding this running program you
mentioned would help.

Did you right click when you hit Command Prompt so you can Run As
Administrator?

You could manually set the size of your restore points so
that they don't grow too large.

final stage where I enter MAXSIZE= Thinking it might be case sentitive I
enter it exact.and have tried various GB sizes. No go!
Since I'm now at maximum size - 35GB - guess I can stop worrying about it.
Can anyone tell me where to go in S.R. in Control Panel to view restore
points?

Did you use an elevated command prompt? Right click
CMD.exe and under the Compatibility tab select
"Run as administrator".

Copy and paste the command below into the CMD window.
If you want to put in a different size, that's fine.

vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1.5GB

Thanks for the sites, Michael. What I tried to say was that I went that
route. It isn't working for me.
Brink - All I get is my last R. point. This morning. I now understand that
it occurs at least daily and at all events - according to all the sites. My
Restore is at Max - 35 out of 238 GBs - so we can rest on this now.

Followed instructions, disabled S.R., and saw C drive regain 34 GB.
Hopefully, setting a manual restore point when needed will suffice if another
virus strikes.
To get back to what started this thread - can I get rid of Movie Maker? Thanks

When first setting up Avast I did select "when screen saver is running". With
your post I now see what it is and why.
To go back to System Restore - If I know exactly the time I want to go back
to; is manually setting that point as effective as if it were done
automatically.
In other words did I jeopardize my computer by disabling SR?
I'm a novice - less than 2 months at a computer. With people like you life
