I can't delete, move or rename (large) files

Hello to the news group!

Hope I'm in the right news group.

Machine is HP 550 with Windows XP prof SP3 (problem occurs also SP2) NTFS
files system

I have a problem: I can't delete, move or rename (large) files. Following
procedure forces this error:
I try to move a large file (ex.1,2GB wav ) from the HDD to a external LAN
Drive (Maxtor shared storage 1TB NTFS). The move starts and run well until 5
seconds before end. Than the progressbar window never close until I click
the cancel button. Than the source file is locked by the explorer. A unlock
tool reports 'Explorer.EXE PID 1624 Handle 1668' Even if i use the
unlocking tool and unlock it from the explorer process, I can't handle it.

If I restart the PC or latest if I start the sytsem in the protected mode,
the lock is released. Anyway, I found a lot of forums where the solution of
restart is discussed, but I do not find any cause for this problem. I can't
believe, that the users of XP will accept such kind of usage. I try to stop
some service or remove the media player or switch of the virus scanner etc.
But the problem is still there. Latest I installed the SP 3 w/o any positiv
result.

Does anybody knows what is the reason for

the stop of the move near the end

and

the permanent lock of the files and how I can set an automaticially unlock
or how can I solve this phenomena?

Thank you for any hint!

Michael from Germany

"Move" implies two processes:
a) Copy
b) Delete
I would try a "copy" process only to see what happens. I would also test
your suspicion about the issue being related to "large" files by repeating
the process with a number of different size files. Here is how you can
create a file of any size very quickly. Run this command from a Command
Prompt:

fsutil file createnew D:\big.bin 1000000000

Lastly I would check if the process is related to the external disk, by
repeating the tests for internal disks only.

Have you tried a different external drive as I have experienced various
problems as far as speed is concerned especially with large files on network
drives 1.2 GB is relatively small but it's probably what you are experiencing
your expecting 100Mbps and getting 5Mbps transfer speed. Try a USB drive or
flash stick External SATA etc.. they work better than basic network drives.
Most of the external drives use software like linux as it's cheap and there
is a conversion happenning which you don't realise. I don't think your
problem is with the operating system look elsewhere.

Hello Pegasus,
thanks for the reply!

Meanwhile I have done some tests you recommand:

Copy and deleate seperatly are ok.

Moving different filesizes are also not ok. (It seems to be independend from
files size)

Moving files from second partition to first also occurs same problem.

Hello PJG,

thank you for your reply.

Yes, I tried different external LAN drives and one USB drive. Same Problem!
My network infrastructure is 100MBit/s all devices (Networkcard, Hub, LAN
drive etc, CAT 5)
I don't know which OS the LAN drive has, could be Linux, but has also NTFS
(Good question I will check it at the Maxtor page later, cause the problem
is also with other drives)
Anyway, with an other W2K PC at the same place I have not such problem.

So I think the problem deals with the XP and maybe with the HP 550 hardware.
I reinstalled als the HP-drivers from HPs homepage, still same problem.

Funny thing I saw: Moving a large file from LAN-HDD to internal HDD works
properly.

does anybody knows the mechanism XP uses to do that lock ?

Your report suggests the following:
- The problem is not dependent on the file size.
- It is not dependent on the target disk.
- It is dependent on the "move" command.

I don't know what tool you use to move the files. Until you have resolved
the problem I suggest you use copy + delete. It will take the same amount of
time but it won't lock up any files.

Hello Pegasus,

the tool is just the windows explorer (cut&paste=move)

How about creating a batch file with "copy" and "del" inside?

Hello to all

I like to share my results with you.

Meanwhile I found the reason of this fault. It deals wit the ZoneAlarm-
Firewall.

If remove the software from the system, moving of files are ok. I remember,
that I had problems with the installation when I prepare the system two
weeks ago. I need two trials installing the software properly. The first
trial hangs the system. Maybe it was one of the first software I installed.

After various positive tests w/o ZA , I install the latest version of
ZoneAlarm and the moving of files still works.

Hope it is fixed now.

Thanks to all
Michael
