Can't delete from deleted items folder

I have upgraded to Office 2003, and as part of this upgraded from OL2000 to
OL2003.

When I try to delete mail items by using the delete icon on the toolbar, I
get a message saying "the messaging interface has returned an unknown error.
If the problem persists, restart Outlook".

I can, however, move items manually to any other folder apart from to
deleted items (when I try this, I get the message "cannot move items")

I can manually delete items in any folder apart from the deleted items
folder by hitting shift+delete, but cannot do this in the deleted items
folder. If I try this, I get the "messaging interface...etc" error.

Although I can "shift>delete" new unwanted messages, my deleted Items folder
is large and I'd like to get the functionaility back.

If I try the "empty deleted items folder" command, I get the same error -
"the messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists, restart Outlook"

I have restarted Outlook, and also used the Inbox Repair Tool (ScanPST), but
the problem remains.

The PST file is 1.5GB, and would appear to be old (97-2002)rather than new
(OL2003) format.

I'd really like to convert it to the new format to remove the 2GB ceiling.

Create a new pst-file by File-> New-> Outlook Data File...
Then move your items from the old pst-file to the newly created one.
Once done you can set the new pst-file as the default delivery location via
Tools->Accounts-> Next-> dropdown list at the bottom.

problem is solved.
A huge thank you!

Roady, I am running outlook 2007 & I am now having the same problem. I set
up a new pst but my contacts & calendar did not transfer over. Both are
blank & it appears that I would have to use 2 calendars as opposed to only
one. Is there a way for me to have those two tranfer in. I have 3 years
worth of stuff on that calendar. If I can not transfer, then besides using 2
calendars what would some other options be. Thanks!
Also how do I find how much space I am allowed to have & how much I am
currently using as this problem could occur again.
