When I delete an entry in a distribution list even though it is not in the
list itself the entry still appears when I use the list in an email address.

Are you allowing autocompletion to choose the list (i.e., the list name pops
up when you start to type)?

The name is no longer on the DL but when I choose the
DL and expand it the deleted entry is still there. This is also the case
with edited entries where the edits don't
seem to take effect.

Choose it where? In the Contacts folder? And you didn't answer my
question.

I choose the distribution list from the address book. When I expand the list
the person that I deleted from the list is still there. I am not using
autocomplete.

How many contacts folders show in under "Outlook Address Book" in the "Show
names from the" drop-down?

There are four names
Accounts
Business Contacts
Contacts
Swim Team 2

The first 2 have nothing in them. We use Contacts for personal friends and
business and the Swim Team 2 list for Swim related contacts.

I recommend to you to repair your Outlook Address Book service before
proceeding with diagnosis of the problem. Click Tools>Account Settings and
selct the Address Books tab. Select the Outlook Address Book service and
click Change. Remove all of the contacts folders that appear. Click OK on
all the diaglogues to get out, stop and restart Outlook. Now, right-click
on each contacts folder you want to appear in the address book and choose
Properties. Select the Outlook Address Book tab and if "Show this folder as
an e-mail address book" isn't checked, check it. Now your Show Names from
the drop-down in the Address Book interface will be a true reflection of the
real contacts folders.

After that, open each contacts folder and make sure the DL exists in only
one of them. In the contacts folder containing the DL, open the DL and make
sure it contains the proper addresses. Then start composing a new message
and type the first three letters of the DL name in the To field. If a
combobox with a list of names pops up, select the DL name from the list
using your arrow keys and then press Delete to remove it from the list.
Now, with just the first three letters of the DL name in the To field, press
Ctrl-K to resolve the list. Click the plus sign to its left and make sure
the list contains only the names you wish.
