I cannot defrag the C: drive of a PC running XP.
I tried defrag again after booting up in safe mode but get the same
message that the drive is read-only.

Does anybody know why? And have a solution?
I'm thinking of buying Iolo Sytem Mechanic as I think that has its own
defragment engine???

I would skip the Sys Mechanic. Are you logging on as an Administrator?
Is the 15% freespace on the drive. Have you run Cleanup? Have you run
Error Checking/chkdsk?

Is the computer running and booting OK from drive C? IS drive C the boot
drive? If not, what is drive C?

If the system somehow thinks the drive is read-only, that's not likely to
help. Especially while you have problems, you should stick to the
system-available tools as much as you can.
I don't have a clue as to why it would think it's read-only.

If the C: drive is the drive where XP is installed, and you can run XP
normally, then it's not read only. Why defrag would think that I don't
know.

When did this problem start? What changed between the time things worked
and now? What changes were made to the system between when it worked and
now? Software/hardware installs?

Have you tried System Restore to a time before the problem appeared?

Have you run chkdsk /r on the drive? Note: don't run chkdsk unless you have
a full and complete backup of important data, but then that should be the
case at all times - having a backup that is.

Sorry for the delay in replying - I had a bit of a domestic crisis.
All sorted out now.

I took on board all you guys were saying but in the end I opted for
System Mechanic because I was being "locked out" by Windows.

Yes, I had tried a system restore, chkdsk. Even did a search and
repair bad sectors that took hours to complete.

End line? System Mechanic cured the problem as far as defragmentation
was concerned.
