Sorry for the delay in replying - I had a bit of a domestic crisis.
All sorted out now.
I took on board all you guys were saying but in the end I opted for
System Mechanic because I was being "locked out" by Windows.
Yes, I had tried a system restore, chkdsk. Even did a search and
repair bad sectors that took hours to complete.
End line? System Mechanic cured the problem as far as defragmentation
was concerned.
