How much free disk space is available on c: ..? I think defrag needs at least
20% free HDD space to function properly..
Cheers

Go into Safe Mode ( restart; tap F8 while it is booting) and defrag
from there. HTH, s

I had a nearly full hard disk recently. The message was that it needs 4%
free but then gave the option to continue anyway and it worked.

Regards.

Hi Bill,

I happen to use Diskeeper 9 from Diskeeper Corp aka.. Executive
International Inc.,
a bigger brother, to the ver in XP, I guess you could say.. Anyway, my
partition I: is used to store my ATI backups and has become quite full of
late..
The message below indicates where I remembered seeing the information as to
the need for at least 20% free space, though it still will defrag,
performance is apparently suffering on partition/drive I: ..
I have not attempted to add any more data to I: to test or to see how far I
can push my luck with this version of Diskeeper..

Findings on I:

Diskeeper has completed a defragmentation run on this volume and there
remain 1 fragmented files and/or directories and 4 excess fragments. (There
were 4 excess fragments before the defragmentation run, and now there are 0%
more.)

The average number of fragments per file is 1.03.

This volume is moderately fragmented, with 6% of the total volume space
available for defragmentation. This level of free space is so low that
performance is suffering from that fact alone. Indeed, fragmentation is the
least of your worries under these conditions. Clear some files off this
volume to achieve a minimum of 20% free space for acceptable performance.

Since the number of excess fragments changed by only 0% on the last
defragmentation run, there is a good possibility that Diskeeper has done the
best it can do with this volume at this time. You should schedule Diskeeper
to run considerably more often than it has been running to reduce the current
fragmentation and maintain a lower level of fragmentation.

Cheers
