can't create a new folder for download

Hello,

(Windows XP Pro SP3, new install, all updates)

During the course of downloading and reinstalling programs, updating,
etc, suddenly I can't create a new folder when my browser asks me
where to install the file to be downloaded. This happens in both IE
and Firefox. A new folder gets created without a name, but I can't see
it in the download dialog. When I click on the little icon for a new
subfolder, it doesn't respond at all.

I am able to create a new folder with Windows Explorer with the usual
File\new\folder sequence.

Theory: I had some problems with a lot of junk in the context menu
with Windows explorer, and ShellExView couldn't get rid of all of
them, so I did delete some registry keys, and I'm pretty sure that's
what caused this problem.

If I knew what registry key affects the creation of the new folder,
perhaps I could cure this problem without doing a system restore. I've
put a lot of new stuff on today and I'm hoping I won't have to re-do
it all.

Many thanks for any advice.

Jack

Do a System Restore to a point in time before you had this problem.
Your context menu problem may come back as well, but you can be more
careful this time with curing it.

Windows XP *is* "version 5."

Windows XP is its marketing name. Under the hood, Windows XP is
Windows NT 5.0.

Kelly is a she. And her tweaks are all outstanding. She is one of the
very best sources of these things.

"Chastised" is a giant overstatement. I didn't mean it that way at
all. I was just trying to be informative.

And it's not sexism. You simply made an incorrect guess. No big deal.

And the main point of my message was not "Kelly is a she." It was "And
her tweaks are all outstanding. She is one of the very best sources of
these things."

> Again, Sorry Kelly!

I'm not sure whether Kelly is still active here these days, but I
don't think so.

One thing that confuses people that have never seen a registry file or
a VBS script is they don't notice the few sentences at the top of
Kelly's page that tell you what to do with the tweak #XXX.

Someone with good intent will advise go to Kelly's Korner and then
some number... Folks find tweak #XXX, click on it and have no idea
what to do next.

There are also no instructions to make a Restore Point or backup your
registry (optional of course) before applying the tweaks, so if your
system suddenly looks like Kelly's system when you are done, you may
not like it and not be sure how to get back to where you started.
Good plan sometimes, but not always executed well.

Have not heard from Kelly in a while...

Not @ you Ken....

No big deal, and no apology necessary.
