Can't create a network at all

I am obviously doing something wrong. I just bought a new
laptop computer [a Compaq Presario 2596] which has both a
ethernet connection and built-in wireless networking. I
also purchased a router / wireless access point to share
the broadband internet connection that was previously
hooked directly to my desktop, and to access files between
the two computers.

The desktop is running Win XP Pro, and the laptop has Win
XP Home.

If I use a network cable, I can access the internet
connection from the laptop. I cannot access / share files
between the computers; I have run the network wizard and
done everthing else I can find in any help or
troubleshooting file. From Network Places on the desktop,
I can see that the notebook but can't explore or access
it -- it "isn't accessible". Network Places on the laptop
shows ONLY the laptop.

I cannot access the internet connection or do anything
else with the wireless connection.

What I would like to end up with eventually is a network
in which three computers can access and share all files --
the cabled XP Pro desktop, the wireless XP Home notebook,
and a cabled WIN 98 desktop.

Any help, insights, suggestions, or spoon-feeding would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Just fought a similar, exasperating problem. 98se machine could see shared files on xp machine, xp machine could only see 98se name but no files. Problem fixed when I installed NetBEUI on both ends. Good luck.

Hi Mark
Enable simple file sharing, share some files, disable internet connection
firewall.
For the wireless card. Have you followed manufacturers install instructions
and driver installation? What problem are you getting exactly. Can you ping
the router? Is it seeing a wireless network? what IP address does it have?
