Can't create clips

For some reason I can't create clips of a particular avi file. I know I have
done it before, but now I can't. The file was from a pass-through from an
analog camcorder to a digital camcorder. I get just one clip of the 8 minute
video, and it is complete. Create clips is turned on. I can create clips for
another avi file OK, but it was directly from the digital camcorder. But I
don't think that's it either, for another direct avi file doesn't create
clips either. I guess I can us split clips, but why do I have to, if clips
were created before. I'm trying to re-do the movie completely in avi. Wmv
video works fine and generate clips. Do you think re-capturing the non-clip
video would fix it?

When capturing from a digital camcorder MM2 looks for breaks in the
timecode, and there are no breaks when using it for pass-thru.

When capturing from analog sources MM2 tries to detect visual scene changes.

Just now I think I figured it out. The original video came an from analog
camcorder. I used pass-through to my digital camcorder, DV into MM.
Originally I saved as a WMV with lots of clips generated. Now, I wanted to
save (after a new edit) as an AVI, so I could later make a VCD. Well, AVI
made just 1 clip, when I imported the original pass-through DV-AVI video. So,
I tried this. I sent the AVI back to tape on the digital camcorder. Now, I
captured again from the camcorder and I got lots of clips! What is going on
here? Maybe my CPU is too slow, 1.2 Ghz. Is there too much to do, going from
A to D, capturing, and making clips. Or is it timing or sync? Any ideas
appreciated.

The Importing Source Files > Video > Intro page of my website has a section
about automatic clip detection. That's about all I know of it other than my
experiences using MM2. Right mouse click on a clip in a collection and opt
to auto-split the clip.... then do it again with the resultant clips....
I've sometimes sub-split a clip 4 times before it stops doing it, so the
splitting results are often different with the same clip.

It looks like I was wrong. It now seems that clips cannot be auto created
when the setup involves analog camcorder(using S connector) in pass through
to digital camcorder with DV output. I tested this on 2 computers using same
source file and setup. But, if I take DV output from just digital camcorder
amd it's tape, no problem. Clips are created. This is kind of a shame, for I
think many have analog tapes that they want to digitize. But, as you say,
clips can be manually created, but for a long video, it will be a big pain.
I'm still not sure what's going on. I wonder if anyone else has had the
problem? Everything else about MM 2.1 seems OK.

When MM2 detects it coming from the digital camcorder it starts looking for
time code breaks for scene splitting.... and it doesn't find any because the
analog tape doesn't have time code.

There's nothing wrong, just no feature to tell MM2 to do optical scene
splitting instead of time code.

This time, I recorded video from the analog camcorder tape on the digital
camcorder tape. Then, ran MM and captured from the digital camcorder. Almost
the same problem. Now, 2 clips, one from the just recorded video, and one
from previously recorded video that I let get recorded to see what would
happen.
So, I guess the only video that gets time coded is video shot from the
actual camcorder that is used to transfer to MM2, and not video that is not
time coded in the first place. Hope I haven't bored you too much!
Thanks, donde

If you stopped and started the digital camcorder twice during the dubbing
from your analog camcorder, that would explain getting two clips. It's not
about scene changes... just stopping and starting your digital camcorder
when recording. ... and when stopping it, pause for at least 5 seconds...

That explains it. So, can you say that any digital source that has a time
code embedded should generate clips in MM2? And analog tape which never had a
time code would not? But scene changes usually will but is not guaranteed. Is
that it in a nutshell?

We're getting closer together....

A digital source with time code won't result in multiple clips unless the
camcorder is stopped and started... there has to be a pause or break in the
timecode. When I put my digital camcorder on a tripod and shoot ocean waves
for 10 minutes without stopping and restarting, I'll get a single 10 minute
clip.

Right that an analog tape that never had timecode won't result in clips when
it's passed into the computer via the pass-thru process from a digital
camcorder.... but if you do an analog capture like I do with my Dazzle 80,
you'll get separate clips due to visual scene changes.... Movie Maker turns
on the visual assessment feature when it senses you are capturing an analog
source.

And you're right... nothing is guaranteed.... it can overboard by giving
you too many clips.... more so with analog capture than digital.
