Can't Copy Text from Browser to Word Documents

Using XP Pro SP3 and Office 2003 Professional

Having issues on websites where I can't copy text from the browser to a Word
Document. When I do this, the document freezes permanently. Not sure if
this happens all websites. I believe, as in the link below, that the
website is protected from user's copying the text.

Link:
http://wiki.monticello.org/mediawiki...ry_of_Congress

If I'm correct, is there a work around....other than straight typing of
everything?
I'm wondering if a feature in Word can be turned off ... such as turning off
an "Embedded Objects".

I tried a Word Forum, but I get no responses.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hello JCO

I have the same version of XP and Word. I just went to the link you
provided and copied and pasted the first three paragraphs into a Word
document, and also into Notepad. As far as I can see, there's nothing
special on the website to prevent this.

Can you copy text from the problem sites into Notepad, or Wordpad?

In Word, if the Office Clipboard task pane isn't showing, display it by
clicking Edit | Office Clipboard. Copy some text from the website; does
it show up as an entry in the Office Clipboard pane?

How exactly are you pasting the text? Does the document still freeze if
you click the entry in the Office Clipboard to paste it?

Let us know and maybe we can get to the bottom of the problem.

Hi Nightowl and JCO,

I'm finding that there is something a bit strange about that Web page when
it comes to copying/pasting or even trying to select the very first
paragraph.

I'm using Word 2002, but I DO have a problem trying to select the first
paragraph that says: "Thomas Jefferson was instrumental in rebuilding the
Library of Congress when he sold the bulk of his book collection to them in
1815."

If I do Edit | Select All | Copy and then try to paste into Word using just
Edit | Paste, my Word also freezes.

However, if I paste into Word using Paste Special and choose Unformatted
Text or Unformatted Unicode Text, I can paste everything on that page EXCEPT
the first paragraph, the one I mentioned above: "Thomas Jefferson was
instrumental in rebuilding the Library of Congress when he sold the bulk of
his book collection to them in 1815."

In order to get that paragraph I used View | Source and copied/pasted from
there.

That's interesting, Alan. Those first two words, "Thomas Jefferson", are
a hyperlink, so maybe that has something to do with it. I use Firefox
and was able to select that paragraph and the following two with no
trouble.

After reading your post I went back and tried using Edit | Select All
and again it worked, so I tried with IE 6. In IE I could select all the
first paragraph *except* "Thomas Jefferson", so I tried Select All and
it pasted fine into Word.

Could it possibly be something to do with the IE version?

Hi Nightowl,

I did use IE6 to try and duplicate JCO's problem, when I posted my earlier
message.

However, just now I launched Firefox and was able to select the first three
paragraphs and paste them into Word in HTML format by using CTRL C without
any difficulty

So, yes, it does appear to be browser-related.
