Can't contact domain after new install

I just installed XP sp1 on a home computer. When I try to
log on for the first time I get an error message:

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be
contacted...

I am not running a domain controller, just a simple home
network.

Any ideas how to get it to let me log on?

Thanks,
Larry

Try to logon to the local machine [via computer name] instead of the domain. If
you are using the ctrl-alt-delt to bring up logon the third box under password
should allow you to logon to the local machine by selecting the drop down arrow
at the far right of the box. If the log onto box does not show, then select
"options" to show it. --- Steve

For what its worth to anybody else reading... I've got a similar post open -
A friend of mine in the UK has just reinstalled their XP Home Edition and it
too is complaining about the domain not found or does not exist... We've
tried to boot in to safe mode too and it also fails to log him in -
Interestingly enough though, even though its a fresh install and he's not
created any users yet (its a single computer, no network (though it will
have dialup internet once he gets to log on and configure it)... During
normal boot, its asking for passwords for users OWNER and GUEST, while in
safemode, its asking for passwords for ADMINISTRATOR and GUEST...

I don't have XP and I'm more of a linux techie with many years experience
taking apart and looking under the hood of windows boxes and I've never
heard of user 'OWNER' before (while ADMINISTRATOR and GUEST are familiar
from NT platforms I've worked on).

Is this the same for you?

By chance did you select to be part of a domain
during the installation (although that should have
failed, leaving you in a workgroup) ?
Have you tried booting into safe mode without
networking, and then logging in with Administrator ?
If you can, then check in System Properties (r-click
properties of My Computer) and see if it is configured
to be in a workgroup.
