Just purchased new notebook running XP Pro. Have existing network with one PC
runnig XP and one running 98. All connected through router. Existing pc's
share files and printers with no problem. Added XP Pro machine and no
difficulty getting internet connection. Ran network set up without issue.
Existing pc's recognize new pc name and is visible when opening up network
connections. However they get access denied message when clicking on new pc
name.
On new XP Pro pc, when clicking show connected computers on network it tells
me I'm not authorized to access network. There are no passwords, etc set up
on the network. Other pc's that I have connected through wireless access
network immediatley with out even running any set up. I'm perplexed as to why
this isn't working.
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you sure the new one has the same workgroup name as the others?

There are two things to check:

1. If the original XP pc is running Home Edition - Home uses only Simple
Sharing. Enable Simple Sharing on your XP Pro machine also.

2. The new machine undoubtedly has Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2
automatically enables the Windows Firewall. If you are not running a
third-party firewall, go to the Windows Firewall applet in Control
Panel and enable File & Printer Sharing on the Exceptions tab. If you
are using a third-party firewall (and have properly configured it to
allow your lan traffic as Trusted), then turn the Windows Firewall off.
You don't want two firewalls running, and a third-party program will be
better than the WF. All firewalls must be properly configured to allow
lan traffic as Trusted.

Thanks for the help. Figured out that it wass firewall settings conflicing
between Norton and XP. I disabled both firewalls, made the connections and
then re enabled both firewalls. All is working good now.
Thanks again!
