Can't connect to network after re-install

I re-installed Win2000 and now I can't connect to the
internet or my home newtwork. Everything looks ok, domain
name is correct, password is correct, etc, but I can't see
anything except the Win2000 computer in the "My Network
Places" screen. I have set the computer to "obtain IP
address automatically".

Any ideas? Need more details?

Thanks.

Either more details, or log on to another computer on your network that is
connected to everything okay, open a command prompt (cmd.exe) and enter:
ipconfig /all

Take note the IP, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server. Enter the same
values on the problem computer, but change the last octen in the IP to a
different number. If on the good computer, the IP address is 192.168.0.23,
for example, give the problem computer an IP address of 192.168.0.24.
(Don't go over 255 or under 2.)

Hi Ray, I did all that, still no connection! I can see the
Win2000 box in the workgroup but no others. The workgroup
name etc, is correct, I have a feeling it must be some
access problem. I'm logged on as "Administrator" so I
should have full access rights. I have a router that the
Win2000 box won't connect to. Theother machines in the
workgroup all work fine and the DHCP is set for enough
users, so it has to be something in the IP config (although
entering everything from a working box should have solved
that) or an access denial issue within Win2000. In Win98
you could release and renew your IP config, can you do this
in Win2000?

Thanks.

Andy.

Yeah, permissions shouldn't matter as far as just browsing your network.

ipconfig /renew
That should do that. But, my guess now is that it's a hardware issue. Do
you have a light on your NIC indicating that there's a good connection?
Also, I've seen W2K ~think~ that you have one specific NIC in the machine,
when you actually have a totally different model, so W2K applies the wrong
drivers and renders it useless. But the OS doesn't realize this. It seems
that most of the NICs I put in W2K machines, Windows thinks it's some
Realtek brand NIC. Everything would seem to be working okay, except for the
fact that there's no network connection. But Windows will still register
the NIC as being installed properly. Maybe it's something like that. If
so, install the correct drivers.

Start with some basic diagnostics from a Command Prompt.
Run ipconfig.exe /all on each machine:
- What IP address do you have in each case?
- What subnet mask?
- What default gateway?
- What DNS server(s)?

I checked the MSI site (mobo manufacturer), not much detail
on the LAN adapter. It's an onboard chip that comes with
the mobo, I'm going to try updating the drivers and if
there's still no joy, I'll disable the onboard LAN and try
a PCI card adapter. I'll let you know what happens.

Also, I tried "ipconfig.exe" and all I get is a brief
flicker of some kind of window, then back to my desktop!

Thanks for your help guys.

You missed the first step, which was "open a command prompt (cmd.exe)
and..."

Andy, just a thought see if your other computers at home
are running Microsoft's netbui protocol. If they are,
then install on your computer. Go to network properties,
install protocol. This might make other computers show up
in network neighborhood, and a start to correct some of
your problems.

Ray, you're right, I forgot the "cmd.exe" lol........

Anyway, I tried to renew the ip config and I got "Error: No
adapters bound to TCP/IP are enabled for DHCP".

I looked in device manager, properties for the adapter,
couldn't find how to eneable DHCP. Ideas?

For Cassandra, the set up is cable modem to router, router
to three pc's via hub. Pc's run Lindows 4.0, Win98 and Win2000.

Thanks guys.

Andy.
