Hello
This one really has me climbing the walls. I recently
picked up a 8600 Inspiron (Dell). Came factory installed
with XP HOME. It worked fine with the wireless linksys card
(g) connected to a linksys wiress router(g) which in turn
was connected to a linksys wired etherfast cable/dsl
router. Everything has been working fine for the past few
weeks. However I am want to set up a client/server
network. This eleminates XP Home for those purposes. So
I have a XP Pro OEM that I have used on other pcs before.
(pre sp1a) without an issues. Did a clean install of the
PRO and figured to dl the necessary updates from the
Microsoft website. Instead of using the wireless setup I
wanted to be connected via the router for a quicker dl. It
wont connect directly through the router. Cannot ping the
router installation page or any of the other pcs on the
p2p network. It can ping itself. All the drivers are
correctly installed etc. I did a direct connect to the
modem and it will connect. However when I got to the
Microsoft update website it is unable to download and for
a lack of a better word it times out.(the site lists it
as being an error) I decided to use a slipstream of
service pack 1 and hotfix rollup hoping that would fix any
issues. Still the same results. Can only connect directly
throught the modem but still unable to download from
Microsoft. So I decided to reinstall XP HOME to verify
that it isnt a hardware issue. Did a dual boot and pro
and home. I am now able to connect to the net via the
router and directly and download from the MIcrosoft
website. This is only through the HOME version . I am not
sure what it wrong or if I am missing a particular file
neccessary to m ake the connection happen via the router
as it does with the HOME VERSION. Can you offer any
suggestions? Desperate........
Wrapping up:
Drivers are all installed
SP1 and Hotfix rollup is installed
OEM is registered for the pc it is installed to
Can connect directly via a modem but not router with pro
Can connect directly and through router with HOME
