Can't connect to Internet

When I install XP my modem will not connect to any
internet access. During installation when prompted to
register on-line it freezes and will not connect. My
modem is a Lucent Win (115K) and operates successfully
otherwise. After uninstallling I went to the HP download
website and updated my modem driver to a Agere Win but it
still will not connect with XP.
