Can't connect to Cable modem

I am trying to connect a Dell Inspiron notebook running Mindows ME to
a LinkSys Cable modem via a USB port. I previously was conecting to
DSL via the USB port without problem.

I've installed the drivers that came with the modem and my pc seems to
recognize the modem just fine. The modem seems to be working and the
ISP tech people tell me everything on their end is fine. When I run
winipcfg, I am unable to release the IP. I click the "release" button
and nothing happens. I have run through the device
properties/configurations and everything seems to be correct. The ISP
tech told me that he has seen other examples where a system has a
"locked" IP.

Any suggestions on how I can resolve this. Once I finally get
connected I will be moving to a wireless router anyway, so I just need
to get this inital connection going after which time I will not be
using the USB port. BTW, this system does NOT have an ETHERNET card,
so that option is not available to me.

Thanks,

Rob R.
