Can't Change Workgroup

Hello,

Not sure if anyone has run into this, but I can't seem to
change my Workgroup name on my computer. Consequently, I
can't seem to network my computers and share
files/printer.

I've gone to the control panel, system, computer name tab
and hit change. It only allows me to change my computer
name, not the workgroup. The workgroup name is grayed
out.

Can anyone help here?

Thanks,
Aaron

Aaron,
are you logged on as administrator? With XP Pro when it
boots up you can hit CTRL ALT DEL 2 times and you will
see the option to log on as administrator. It sounds to
me like a permissions issue.

~hope this helps

In the Computer Name tab, make sure that you've selected Workgroup,
not Domain.

Try changing the workgroup name using the Network Setup Wizard.

You can network your computers and share files and printers even if
there are computers in different workgroups.

To see another computer, regardless of what workgroup it's in, type
its name in the Start | Run box preceded by two backslashes. For
example:

\\Laptop

Hi Steve,

I don't have an option for workgroup or domain in my
computer name tab.

I only have an button for change, no other options.

I'm using XP home edition. Not sure if I should have
that option.

Thanks,
Aaron

What do you see when you click Change? There should be choices for
"Member of" Domain or Workgroup. Click the button labeled Workgroup.

If that button is grayed out, it could be because Client for Microsoft
Networks is disabled or isn't installed. To see:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.

2. Right click your local area network connection.

3. Click Properties.

4. If Client for Microsoft Networks appears in the list of network
components, make sure there's a check mark in the box next to it.

5. It doesn't appear, install it by clicking Install | Client | Add |
Client for Microsoft Networks | OK.
