When trying to reply to an email in microsoft outlook using microsoft word as
the editor I can't change the format of the font (size, color, nothing) THe
toolbar is displyed but not active.

Is the message in plain text? PLain text offers no formatting options.

After furious head scratching, joe asked:

rich text. I hit reply...word pops up and I type. the format toolbar is
inactive cant change anything. Only when I start a new email can I format
text.
