Can't chage file types in Folder Options

I've just noticed that I can no longer use the file types tab in the Folder
Options applet. I suspect that the problem is due to one or more of the
security patches released last week. All the boxes on the file types tab
are greyed out.

I don't think that is the cause, because it isn't happening to any of my PCs.

See tips 3674, 6546, and links in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsiinc.com

Thanks. Your tip 3674 solved the problem. I can't answer the question of
why this occurred. I've never changed the policy to not allow changing file
associations (and I'm the only user.) Furthermore, the dialogs were working
just last Tuesday - I know, because I was still in the process of
reinstalling after a fresh format. On Wednesday, I installed 10 patches
from Microsoft - this immediately raised a strong suspicion.

Something somewhat similar to the OP's problem:

When I use Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|File Types, then select
either the "Folder" or "File Folder" type, then click the
"Advanced" button I get the usual dialog listing the actions
currently available for folders. However, I can only use the GUI
to add new actions - the buttons for Edit and Remove are disabled.

I looked through the "Tips & Tricks" for a while, but my searches
turned up too many irrelevant hits - mostly because there seems
to be no way to restrict the searches to the title/subject of a
tip. Because the searches always check the body of each tip a
*lot* of bad hits are generated.

Sounds like you are NOT using boolean expressions
